Mary Ellen Rossiter Groover died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at her Washington Square home after an extended illness. She was 88. Mrs. Groover, a native of Savannah, was a graduate of St. Vincent’s Academy and St. Joseph’s School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse and began her nursing career at the Central of Georgia Railway Hospital, later accepting a position at Candler Central Hospital where she retired as head nurse. She was a Roman Catholic and a communicant of The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
Mrs. Groover, a second generation American of Irish descent, lived in the city’s Old Fort area her entire eighty-eight years, including the Houston Street residence where she died. She was proud to continue living in the neighborhood so dear to the city’s Irish, as one of its oldest residents of heritage. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack W. Groover Sr., her parents, Joseph A. Rossiter, Sr. and Julia Buttimer Rossiter and a son, Joseph A. Groover.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. Jack W. Groover, Jr., Thomas A. Groover, and Francis R. Groover; five grandsons, five granddaughters, three great-granddaughters and a great-grandson.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7, at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist with a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
Burial will follow in Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jack W. Groover, III, George S. Groover, Michael J. Groover, Thomas Groover, Michael Groover, and grandson-in-law, Scott Allen.
